April's Fangirl Faves
MOVIES
April has a LOT to offer fangirls, fanboys, and fan-non-binaries alike. I know I won’t be the only one screaming for Hawkeye/Ronin’s heartbreaking story about losing his family, and I know we’re all hoping the Stucky fandom gets their happy ending. Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame looks amazing. I am excited for this movie, but sad that the past ten years of story building is coming to an end.
We got a new teaser video for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it already has me in a tizzy. Rey is front and center, as she should be, and the intro music gave me goosebumps. It is going to be epic. All the trolls that said a woman couldn’t be the lead in a Star Wars franchise film need to go fork themselves.
TV
I have been obsessed with Speechless on ABC for awhile now. It has just the right amount of humor and heart, and John Ross Bowie is such an underrated actor. There isn’t a bad actor among them though, and this season their characters have been given more room to shine as they grow.
I just started AP Bio, because Patton Oswald is awesome in everything. It took me a few episodes to get past how unlikable the main character is, and truthfully, I still don’t like him. The supporting cast is great though, and they really transform what could have been a true suckfest into a hilarious show.
BOOKS
Brightly Burning is the premiere novel by Youtube sensation, Alexa Donne. Brightly Burning is a retelling of Jane Eyre, but set in space. This book will definitely be made into a movie. It’s a great concept, and very well done. The character of Stella is whip-smart and has a rye humor that I just love. I am in the middle of rereading this, and so I’m sure I will have more fangirling to do soon.
The book I’m REALLY fangirling about right now is My Mother Road. I wrote My Mother Road this past year after traveling the Mother Road with my husband. I have been querying for a month and a half, but it feels like an eternity. It is hard to always stay positive. The feedback we’ve received from agents and betas has been overwhelmingly positive though. My Mother Road just hasn’t found the perfect fit agent yet.
MUSIC
I fell in love with Mogli’s voice while watching the documentary, Expedition Happiness. She has a haunting ethereal voice that just runs my spine every time that I hear it. Mogli released a new EP, Patience. There are only five songs on it, but they are so lush and beautiful that I just can’t stop listening.
When I’m not listening to Mogli (or Blippi thanks to my beloved grandson) I’m listening to The Umbrella Academy soundtrack. Blood Like Lemonade by Morcheeba is my favorite song on the album. The song is in turn heartbreaking and uplifting. The lead singer, Skye Edwards’ voice is rich and full. It is SO GOOD!
OTHER
I’m getting back into podcasts lately. Not as much as when I completely lost it for Welcome to Night Vale, but pretty close. My Favorite Murder has just launched a bunch of new shows on their Exactly Right podcast network, and I intend on doing a deep dive into those soon. Currently, I’m listening to The Novel Tea Show podcast by Kat O’Keefe, Alexa Donne, and Lainey Kress. It’s a lot of good content for writers, readers, and fangirls too.
